Jennifer has been working since she was a teenager. With nearly 2 decades in the workforce, she witnessed the hardships facing today’s students, workers, parents, and retirees. Through her work, she has advocated for the rights of students and employees with disabilities, women workers, and survivors of sexual assault. These experiences led her back to the University of Michigan to study social work. In her program, Jennifer focuses on policy and leadership.
Jennifer Shirk's Priorities
"Recognizing that social isolation has a negative impact on health, one of my goals is to expand opportunities for social connection across the county.

Physical and digital accessibility should never get in the way of participation.

As a certified accessibility professional, I will work to increase accessibility in Jackson County’s physical and digital spaces."
"Today’s political divide is getting in the way of getting things done.

As Commissioner, I will use transparency, fact-based decision-making, and collaborative governance to find common ground and make positive change."
"Access to affordable healthcare, childcare, and education can determine if a person is able to enter the workforce and stay employed.

I will draw from my social work background to reduce barriers to accessing these critical services."
